Shutters are a timeless window covering that add style and practicality to any room. Whether you’ve chosen them for their light control, privacy, or sheer aesthetic appeal, it’s important to keep them clean without damaging the materials or finishes.
Not all shutters are created equal when it comes to cleaning—some materials can cope with a bit of moisture, while others need a more delicate touch. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to clean your shutters based on the material they’re made from, and include a specific section on cleaning shutters in the kitchen, where natural cooking grease and moisture can cause more buildup over time.

🏠 Cleaning Shutters by Material
💧 Waterproof Shutters
Ideal for Kitchens and Bathrooms
Herm Shutters – Fully waterproof. Can be cleaned thoroughly with warm water and mild detergent.
Wisley Shutters – UK-made, inherently waterproof. Excellent for areas exposed to moisture.
🧽 Cleaning Tip:
Use a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Add a drop of washing-up liquid for stubborn marks.
🌳 Real Wood Shutters
Natural and beautiful, but need gentle care
Avoid moisture as it can cause warping or damage.
Dust regularly using a feather duster or microfibre cloth.
Only use a very lightly damp cloth if absolutely necessary.
🚫 Avoid:
Spraying cleaners directly onto the wood or using abrasive cloths.
🪵 MDF or Engineered Wood Shutters
Hardwearing but not waterproof
Dust regularly with a soft cloth or vacuum brush.
For light marks, a damp (not wet) cloth is safe.
Avoid soaking or using bleach-based cleaners.
🧹 Cleaning Tip:
Focus on high-contact areas like tilt rods or handles where grime may build up. Don’t forget to open the Shutter doors and clean the inside of the frame. Use the crevice tool attachment on your vaccuum cleaner to clean out the area between the window and the back of the frame!
