How to Reconnect a Child Safety Bean for Roller & Roman Blinds

Some of our roller blinds and Roman blinds are fitted with a child safety chain connector, commonly called a “bean.” This device is designed to separate under pressure, preventing the formation of a dangerous loop and helping to reduce the risk of serious injury or death to young children.

Why the Child Safety Bean Is Important

This device is not a fault — it’s a legal requirement under the BS EN 13120 child safety standard for internal blinds. If activated, the connector will split apart, just like an airbag in a car deploying. Its purpose is to protect children and vulnerable individuals from the risk of entanglement.

Even if there are no children living in your home, all blinds we supply and fit must comply with these regulations. This is particularly important in rental properties, holiday lets, or any home where children may visit.

When and How to Reset the Connector

If the child safety bean has separated, the blind will not operate as normal until it is reconnected. The video below shows you how to safely and correctly reconnect the chain connector so your blind can be used again. This is a simple operation and can be done without tools.

Watch the Step-by-Step Guide

The video will take you through:

  • ✅ Identifying the child safety bean on your blind
  • ✅ Correctly aligning the parts of the connector
  • ✅ Safely clipping the chain back into place
